About 45% entered with visas that allowed them to visit or reside for a limited amount of time, then overstayed.The Pew Hispanic Center has published a fact sheet on modes by which the unauthorized migrant population enters. New estimates show that nearly half  entered through a port of entry such as an airport or border crossing point where they were subject to inspection by immigration officials.
