The Senate’s latest actions include a vote in favor of a job verification system for immigrant workers. The Senate did not get too bogged down in the details of how such a system can be made accurate and effecient — although this ought to be of obvious concern given the numerous problems that already plague DHS’ system of data collection and dissemination in the realm of immigration.
The Senate has thus far failed to remediate some of the most troubling provisions abrogating the rights of asylum seekers. Unless successful efforts are made to improve the provisions currently contained in the bill, this round of immigration legislation is likely to put the US (even further) out of step with its treaty obiligations toward refugees.
