The National Guard and the Border

Tonight President Bush will speak to the nation on immigration reform.  He tried to ease the worries of his Mexican counterpart yesterday as he prepared for a nationally televised address tonight unveiling a plan to send thousands of National Guard troops to help seal the nation’s southern border against illegal immigrants.  To view the Washington Post’s analysis, click here

One of the interesting aspects of the National Guard proposal is that the administration fervently denies that the deployment would represent a “militarization” of the border.  But, the Guard patrols no doubt will carry arms and the threat of force.  As in the past, it is almost inevitable that force will be used — and it probably will not be directed at the Minutemen.

Remember who the National Guard will most likely be encountering.  Familes seeking better lives.
