2 more states on immigration

Today, the Colorado Supreme Court rejected a ballot initiative that would deny most state services to illegal immigrants. The Court initially rejected the initiative on June 12, but the resulting political tempest caused the court to review its initial decision. The Colorado court stood by the ruling today, on the ground that the initiative’s language was too vague and confusing. “Moreover,” the court reasoned, “the initiative’s failure to specify any definitions, services, effects or purposes makes it impossible for a voter to be informed as to the consequences of his or her vote.”

Meanwhile, immigration has become a front-burner issue in Utah. Republican candidates in that state generally profit from their support for Bush, but on the immigration issue, support for the President is not necessarily the most useful political position. The immigration issue “has led to battles within the Republican ranks and has threatened lawmakers including five-term Rep. Chris Cannon.” A link to AP coverage is here.
