Ruminations on Naturalization

Reflecting on the wave of July 4 naturalizations, Peter Spiro challenges the notion of the naturalization ceremony as a symbol of “assimilation and rebirth.”  Insead, he suggests that “[t]he changing face of naturalization is inexorably reflecting larger trends in transnational attachment, beyond the ken of policymakers, trends which suggest the erosion of citizenship as a reflection of strong national community.”  A link to his full Opinio Juris post — which provides much more nuance and analysis — is here.
