Immigration Issues in Missouri Politics

The question of howto curb undocumented immigration to the United States – and what to do aboutmillions of undocumented residents already here – has caused sharp divisionsin Congress this year and spilled over into Missouri’s U.S. Senate race.

Landmark legislation to safeguard U.S. borders and give millions of undocumented immigrants a chance at citizenship cleared the Senate in June, but lawmakers who favor the measure don’t expect to reach anycompromise with conservative opponents in the House this year.

Both Republican Sen. Jim Talent and his Democratic challenger, StateAuditor Claire McCaskill, oppose the Senate bill for different reasons.Talent wants to focus more on border security, while McCaskill wants tocrack down on businesses that hire undocumented workers. Click here.
