Will Immigration Reform Be an Election 2006 Issue?

Voters should express their anger at Republican immigration reform proposals — such as efforts to construct a 700-mile fence along the border and to criminalize illegal immigration — at the polls this fall, Democratic congressmen golfing in El Paso said Saturday. “My hopes are that it will infuriate Democrats and Republicans and independents and that they will show their anger in their voting November 7,” said Rep. Rubén Hinojosa, D-Texas. Rep. Silvestre Reyes, D-Texas, invited House representatives, including Hinojosa, Solomon Ortiz, D-Texas, and Xavier Becerra, D-California, to the second annual El Paso County Democratic Party Golf Tournament on Saturday at the Painted Dunes Golf Course. Hinojosa said Republicans are using a ploy that steers the national dialogue toward border security instead of focusing on calls from the business community to create a guest-worker program.   Click here for the full story.
