Immigrant Just Can’t Win: Wins Before IJ But Remains in Detention
When he ruled that former Sierra Leonean coup leader Sam Kambo, now residing in Austin, Texas, should be granted permanent residency in the United States, an immigration judge last June soundly rejected the government’s claim that Kambo had participated in a 1992 mass murder in his native country. But 69 days after Judge Gary Burkholder filed his opinion in the case, Kambo remains jailed in the custody of Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Kambo’s lawyer filed a federal lawsuit challenging Kambo’s detention as a violation of his constitutional rights and cited the case as a symptom of a dysfunctional immigration law system and an abuse of government power.
