Refugee Experience Series

The Refugee Experience Series: The Beautiful Country

The Refugee Experience Series is a two-part film and discussion event focusing on the personal experience of global refugees from Vietnam and Sudan. The first part of the series will feature the powerful drama, “The Beautiful Country.” This film is about the story of Binh, considered a “bui doi” Vietnamese boy (fathered by an American soldier during the Vietnam War), and his journey of hardship to America. His passage is representative of the refugee experience of millions of Asians who have made similar journeys as boat people.

An informal discussion and reception will follow the screening. The Beautiful Country event is intended to promote a candid understanding of the Vietnamese refugee experience. This is an opportunity for the interested public to connect with those who have been refugees and organizations actively working to help this Vietnamese population rebuild their lives in the US.

This first part of The Refugee Experience Series will exclusively focus on what it means to be a refugee from the Vietnam War era. It will set the stage for the second part of the series in January, which will focus on what it means today to be a refugee from Sudan and the civil conflict occurring in that country.
