New Book: The Closing of the American Border
New Book from Edward Alden:
Dear Prof. Hing,
I wanted to draw your attention to a book I have written, just published by HarperCollins, which I think will be of considerable interest to you. It is called The Closing of the American Border: Terrorism, Immigration and Security Since 9/11, and is based on reporting I did when I was the Washington bureau chief of the Financial Times, and subsequent work after I joined the Council on Foreign Relations. The book tells the story of the struggles inside the Bush administration over how to respond to 9/11, interspersed with tales of innocent people who got caught up in the fallout from the policies that were enacted.
The book is journalistic one rather than an academic study, but the overall argument is very similar to the one you have made in your book, Deporting Our Souls: that the United States got it very wrong, and has paid a high price, for using immigration law as the primary tool for trying to keep terrorists out of the country.
It is up on Amazon and in all the usual book stores.I hope that the book will provide some valuable insights for people inside and outside the government who want to begin undoing some of the worst mistakes of the post-9/11 era.
With best regards,
Ted
