The Empire State’s New Senator Gains Diverse Constituents

225pxkirsten_gillibrand_2006_offici As Kirsten Gillibrand (who by the way is a graduate of Dartmouth and UCLA Law School) assumes her new responsibilities representing the people of New York in the U.S. Senate, she will find her constituents are now a far more diverse group than the residents of the state’s 20th congressional district near Albany, whom she previously represented in the U.S. House of Representatives. Not only is New York one of the most ethnically diverse states in the nation, but it is also an historic gateway for immigrants from virtually every part of the world.

The Immigration Policy Center has prepared the following fact sheet for Senator Gillabrand that shows that Immigrants, Latinos and Asians are a political and economic powerhouse contributing much more than food, language and culture, but are part of the economic engine that keeps the state running strong.  See Snapshot of NY Immigrant Demographic and Economic Makeup.  One key fact:  1 in 5 of New York’s residents are immigrants, with half of the immigrants now naturalized citizens eligible to vote.
