Refugees and Asylees: 2008
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Immigration Statistics has released data on refugees and asylees in fiscal year 2008. A total of a little more than 60,000 refugees were admitted into the United States in 2008, with the leading countries of nationality for the refugees Burma, Iraq, and Bhutan. Nearly 23,000 persons were granted asylum, including a little mnore than 12,000 affirmative grants. The leading countries of nationality for persons granted asylum were China, Colombia, and Haiti.
