Are Immigrants Good for the Environment?
Check out Ali Modarres’s article “Immigrants Are ‘Greening’ our Cities, How About Giving them a Break?”. The article gives data on the rate of transit and alternative transportation usage among recent immigrants to the U.S., noting that it is higher among these populations – as many planners might want – but is not receiving the same attention or rewards offered to middle-class/native-born populations in some cases. Modarres gives data on the nation as a whole, then takes the case study of immigrant-populated Southern California to consider the effects and reasons for higher transit ridership and housing density among the newly arrived.
