More on Detention Center Protests in Texas

From Edith Galvan of the ACLU in Austin:

You Are Needed in New Braunfels and in West Texas

The Texas cities of Pecos and New Braunfels are very different and many miles apart, yet they share the common link of the private prison company GEO Group and of injustice at Reeves County Detention Center (RCDC).

We ask you to make the trip to New Braunfels on Thursday, Dec. 10 or to Pecos on Saturday, Dec. 12 to ask for change. RCDC houses non-violent immigrants. Last year two prisoners died, likely as the result of poor medical treatment. The deaths triggered two uprisings at the facility in as many months.

You can help.

Observe International Human Rights Day In New Braunfels
On Dec. 10 we will meet outside the regional headquarters of the GEO Group in New Braunfels. The GEO Group, a profitable corporation with a checkered past in the private prison industry, administers the Reeves County Detention Center. In peaceful observance of International Human Rights Day, we will tell GEO that conditions at Reeves must improve and those housed in their facilities must be treated humanely.

What: Demonstration outside GEO Group Regional Headquarters
When: Thursday, Dec. 10 @ noon
Where: 1583 Common Street,

RCDC, One Year Later
Two days after New Braunfels, we will meet in Pecos to walk to RCDC. Dec. 12 is the one-year anniversary of the first uprising at Reeves when prisoners protested the death of an inmate alleging poor medical care. We will stand together with the families of the imprisoned and once again ask the federal government to investigate conditions at the facility and hold companies like GEO Group accountable.

What: Vigil at the Reeves County Detention Center
When: Saturday, Dec. 12 @ 11 a.m.
Where: Meet at Reeves County Courthouse, 100 E. 4th Street, Google map

Why We Are Doing This
The ACLU of Texas, Grassroots Leadership, National Network for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, and Southwest Workers Union have joined together as a coalition to work to restore American values to federal prison and detention systems in Texas. We ask for your support to ensure Reeves isn’t ignored by the federal government, Reeves County, or the GEO Group.

Our goal is to hold the government and private contractors accountable for these serious and widespread allegations of prisoner abuse, which have resulted in at least nine deaths in four years, and countless prisoners living in daily fear for their lives.
