Mexican and Indian Immigrants Lead Naturalization Numbers
Each year, more than a half million immigrants become U.S. citizens through the naturalization process. In general, these are adult, lawful permanent residents who have resided in the United States for five years. Fewer years of residence are required for those married to a U.S. citizen or those who are in the U.S. military. For example, in 2010, 619,913 individuals were naturalized. The leading number of those naturalized were from Mexico (67,062), followed by India (61,142), the Philippines (35,465), the People’s Republic of China (33,969), and Vietnam (19,315).
