The “Chinatown Massacre” of 1870: A Podcast
California was a hotbed of anti-Chinese sentiment in the late 1800s. This podcast on the Hidden History of LA tells the largely unknown story of the “Chinatown Massacre,” a mass lynching in downtown Los Angeles in 1871. Approximately 500 Los Angeles residents, almost one tenth of the city’s population, laid siege to L.A.’s original Chinatown and lynched 18 Chinese immigrants, making it the largest incident of mass lynching in American history.
Scott Zesch documents the history of the Chinatown Massacre in a book.
