Access to Justice for Immigrant Families and Communities
Stanford Law School’s Immigrants’ Rights Clinic and the Northern California Collaborative for Immigrant Justice (NCCIJ) have released a 42-page joint report on the effect of attorney representation during deportation cases. It’s based on their study of cases before the San Francisco Immigration Court.
Their findings include:
- Detained immigrants with attorneys were three times more likely to win their deportation cases in San Francisco Immigration Court than those without attorneys.
- About two-thirds of detained immigrants have no legal representation at any point in their removal proceedings.
- Many detained immigrants have family and community in Northern California. Over 50 percent of immigrants represented by organizations that the Stanford Clinic surveyed had lived in the United States for at least 10 years or more.
In addition, the report includes findings about attorney representation and the likelihood of detention. There’s also very interesting information about bond amounts.
