Second Democratic Presidential Debate, Immigration Discussed, Obama Removal Record Leads to Disruption

The second night of the second round Democratic presidential debates followed the same format as the first, with immigration as the second question.  I found it a bit disappointing that the questions focused on de-criminalization and ensuring undocumented immigrant access to a college education, important issues but not the only ones, and no real discussion of the candidates’ views on some kind of immigration overhaul, whether one calls it comprehensive immigration reform or something else.  It was good to be reminded that Senator Michael Bennet was one of the bi-partisan sponsors of the 2013 immigration reform proposal passed by the Senate.

Last night, some protest activity briefly disrupted the debate.  I could not make out the chants as I watched and listened.  North Carolina Public Radio explains that the first disruption centered on a police shooting and the second disruption was a

“group of protesters [who] briefly disrupted the debate to protest former Vice President Joe Biden and the Obama administration’s record on immigration. A group who identified themselves as the Cosecha Movement began chanting `3 million deportations’ and unfurled a banner that read `Stop all deportations on day one.'”

Immigrant rights activists with the group Movimiento Cosecha hold Mexican rebozo scarves stating, “Stop All Deportations On Day One.” An activist with the group brought one in to the second Democratic debate in Detroit on July 31, 2019. Newsweek reports on the protest.

As the Washington Examiner reported, President Trump appeared to be watching this week’s second Democratic presidential debate, tagging debate host CNN in a tweet critiquing former President Barack Obama’s immigration policy.
