The Road Ahead in Immigration Law: What Can the President Do?

LOS ANGELES, CA — While legislation to enact a path to citizenship for undocumented residents hangs by a thread in Congress and major legal challenges to existing administrative programs go forward in the courts, the Center for Immigration Law and Policy (CILP) at UCLA Law turns its focus to the President’s role with its fall conference: The Road Ahead in Immigration Law: What Can the President Do?
The conference will consist of three live, virtual sessions. In the first, Univision National Network anchor and author Jorge Ramos will speak with Erika Andiola, Chief Advocacy Officer of RAICES Texas; Cristina Jiménez Moreta, Managing Director of United We Dream; and Lorella Praeli, Co-President of the Center for Community Change. Erika, Cristina, and Lorella all played a crucial role in the creation of DACA a decade ago.
CILP’s second session, moderated by CILP Faculty Co-Director Hiroshi Motomura, will feature three advocates working to defend and expand Temporary Protected Status, deferred action, and other forms of executive immigration relief: Pablo Alvarado, Co-Executive Director of the National Day Laborer Organizing Network; Guerline M. Jozef, President of the Haitian Bridge Alliance; and Karen Tumlin, founder of Justice Action Network.
And the final session, moderated by CILP Faculty Co-Director Ahilan Arulanantham, will feature three of the foremost experts on executive power in the immigration context: Professor Jennifer M. Chacón of the UC Berkeley School of Law, Professor Adam B. Cox of the NYU School of Law, and Professor Shoba Sivaprasad Wadhia of Penn State Law and Director of its Center for Immigrants’ Rights Clinic.
