Suicide attempts highlight mental health concerns in immigrant detention
Rafael Bernal for the Hill reports that a suicide attempts at a New Mexico immigration detention facility are heightening concerns about mental health treatment in the system. Brazilian national Kelsey Vial killed himself at the Torrance County Detention Facility in Estancia, N.M., on Aug. 24, according to the official Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainee death report. Conditions at the Torrance facility have been criticized. An ACLU of New Mexico report is entitled “‘THEY TREAT US LIKE WE’RE ANIMALS:’ INSIDE TORRANCE COUNTY’S TROUBLED DETENTION CENTER.”
