Passing of Human Rights Attorney and Advocate Peter Schey
The Los Angeles Times has announced the passing of Peter Schey, a Los Angeles-based human rights attorney and advocate. Schey has led many important immigrant rights cases and was the founder and Executive Director of the Center for Human Rights and Constitutional Law. He was also a founder of El Rescate and the National Immigration Law Center.
Among the many cases that he litigated is Plyler v. Doe, a 1982 Supreme Court case protecting the rights of undocumented children to attend public school. He also litigated Flores v. Reno, which challenged the detention of children and resulted in the landmark Flores settlement protecting children in immigration custody.
