One More Voice on Immigration Reform
My friend Lilia Velasquez, an influential immigration and human rights attorney in San Diego, California, Indigenous Project Director of Proyecto ACCESO, and adjunct professor of immigration law at California Western School of Law, agrees with Bill Hing about the immigration reform proposal, which Bill has dubbed the Latino and Asian Exclusion Act of 2007:
I’m with Bill 100 percent. I think that the bill is so bad that I rather keep the bad status quo, than get stuck with a law that will make the situation worse. The problem is that most people are so anxious to have something passed (along with Bush and some Congresspeople) that they are willing to settle for anything, just so they can claim a victory on immigration reform. Second, I fear that the DHS bureaucracy will not be able to administer a program that is so convoluted, and that the requirements for the triggers will not be met. If the goal of the reform is to fix a broken system, it won’t happen. . . . .
