Dallas School Discourages Student Protests

One year after thousands of students left class to protest federal immigration policies, the Dallas school district has warned that students who repeat the walkouts will be punished. Superintendent Michael Hinojosa laid out possible disciplinary measures in a letter sent Monday night to Dallas Independent School District principals. The principals were to distribute the letter to students and parents.

The district is discouraging students from attempting to repeat three days of walkouts that began a year ago Tuesday. About 10,000 students walked out, leaving class for rallies at a park and Dallas City Hall.

“Each day a student misses class is a day of education lost,” Hinojosa said in the letter. “Regardless of your stance on immigration issues, your support is needed in ensuring your child understands the importance of being in school.”

Latinos make up about two-thirds of the district’s students, with some of them from immigrant families. Click here.
