Immigrant Crime Rates are Low

Immigration andCrimes – Using frighteningimages of immigrants as criminals is not a new political tactic. This rhetoric, however, bears no relationship to the reality of the immigrant experience inAmerica. To quote a 1997 paper jointly sponsored by the Carnegie Endowment forInternational Peace and the Urban Institute, “Few stereotypes ofimmigrants are as enduring, or have been proven so categorically false overliterally decades of research, as the notion that immigrants aredisproportionately likely to engage in criminal activity.” More recentwork from the Migration Policy Institute has again confirmed that “infact, immigrants have the lowest rates of imprisonment for criminal convictionsin American Society.”
