March 2022 Constitutional Law Schmooze on Citizenship

The 2022 Constitutional Law Schmooze focused on citizenship. The two-day gathering, convened by Professor Mark Graber on March 18-19, 2022, brings together political scientists and law professors engaged in research on topics related to Constitutional Law. The tradition started nearly 20 years ago to provide constitutional scholars with an opportunity for informal dialogue on interesting and provocative topics. Though the group typically meets in-person at the University of Maryland, this year’s gathering met via zoom. The virtual format allowed more than 75 participants from multiple countries and in many career stages. Individual participants submit 10-15 page tickets as conversation starters and discussions roamed from Native American citizenship, to Dred Scott and the Civil War, to immigrants, to second-class or social citizen groups who possess formal citizenship and yet lack belonging in other respects.

Prior Schmooze topics have included comparative constitutional politics, American constitutional politics, political development and political theory gather for stimulating discussion on such topics as “Juristocracy,” “The Canon of Constitutional Law,” and “The Hardest Question in Constitutional Law.”

A Princeton Con Law Schmooze has also been instituted. The 2021 gathering concerned executive power.
