El Salvadoran TPS and EADs
El Salvadoran Temporary Protected Status Re-Registration and the Issuance of Employment Authorization Documents (EADs)
· USCIS received approximately 250,000 TPS re-registration applications from nationals of El Salvador and over 200,000 of those cases have already been approved. Approved individuals should have already received or will be receiving a new EAD very shortly.
· Approximately 15,000 re-registration applications were denied and those applicants should have already received or will be receiving a denial notice very shortly.
· Other re-registrants who have already had their biometrics appointment (for collection of fingerprints, photograph, and signature) at a USCIS Application Support Center (ASC), but who are still awaiting their new EAD, either will be mailed an interim 90-day card while USCIS completes processing of the re-registration application, or will be mailed a notice informing the re-registrant of any unresolved issues while their cases are being held. These interim EADs and notices should have already been received or be received very shortly.
· A small number of individuals who have pending appointments for biometrics collection are being mailed a letter informing them that they may report to an ASC to receive an extension sticker to be affixed to their existing EAD. The sticker will extend the validity of their existing card through December 2005. In some cases, the validity date may be January 2006, depending on the sticker availability. Stickers CANNOT be obtained at local USCIS offices. They may be obtained only at ASCs.
· USCIS is closely monitoring the extension sticker distribution process, which involves just 3 percent of total filings for Salvadoran TPS, to ensure that only these particular re-registrants present themselves to an ASC to receive the extension sticker.
· A TPS re-registrant who fails to appear at an ASC for a scheduled biometrics appointment risks denial of his/her TPS re-registration and withdrawal of his/her TPS, unless there is good cause for not keeping the appointment.
· USCIS is confident, with these additional measures, that gaps in employment authorization for eligible Salvadoran TPS beneficiaries will be minimized.
