Proposition 200 (Arizona) — Proof of Citizenship Requrement for Voter Registration
The Los Angeles Times (November 5) reports that a new Arizona law — Proposition 200 — requiring proof of citizenship to register to vote has been enforced in ways that make it difficult for some U.S. citizens to prove their citizenship. If one’s married name does not match the name on the birth certificate, for example, further proof of citizenship is being required. In Pima County, which includes Tucson, over 60% of the people who recently attempted to register to vote were rejected. Dan Stein of the Federation for American Immigration Reform lauded the new voter registration requirements. This part of Propostion 200 was designed to reduce voter fraud by immigrants, which was not a clear problem, but is being enforced in ways that affect citizens.
