Immigration News Tidbits
Alfonso Chady, Long wait angers migrants, The Miami Herald, January 16, 2006
Maria Isabel Trujillo, a Cuban immigrant, says she was excited ”beyond belief” when she heard almost three years ago that her citizenship application had been granted.
”The lady who asked me questions about why I wanted to be a citizen told me I had been approved,” Trujillo recalled. “Then she told me to wait for the formal approval in writing by mail along with an invitation to the swearing-in ceremony.”
She’s still waiting. For the rest of the article, see

Sara Ines Calredon, Border security bill could overwhelm Valley courts, The Brownsville Herald (TX), January 15, 2006
A public defender says the impact a House border security bill would have on the Rio Grande Valley’s federal court system and jails would be “absolutely overwhelming.”
The bill, House Resolution 4437 – passed by the House of Representatives on Dec. 16 amid much controversy over some of its provisions – calls for construction of a wall along the border and making illegal entry into the U.S. a felony.
The bill still requires passage by the Senate and a signature from the president before becoming law.
“The workload would just be unimaginable,” said Marjorie A. Meyers, the federal public defender for the Southern District of Texas based in Houston.
“It would absolutely overwhelm the border courts.” For the rest of the article see,
