Immigration Conference in Tennessee

Dear Colleague:

Latino immigration to Tennessee has grown enormously from 1990 – 2000, and is projected to double within the next 20 years. With this increased presence in local communities come a series of academic and policy questions, and new challenges and opportunities. We invite you to the University of Tennessee to attend a conference to hear and discuss these issues. The conference will be held at the University of Tennessee Conference Center in Knoxville, Tennessee, on March 31-April 1.

This conference, a first of its kind for the University of Tennessee, will include presentations by scholars engaged in current research on contemporary migration and its impact, focusing on Latinos/as in the U.S.

Southeast and Tennessee. Keynote speakers include:

Prof. Alejandro Portes, Distinguished Professor and Chair of Sociology, Princeton University, who will speak on “The Nativist Challenge: The Real Perils for Constructing a Better America”.

Prof. Raúl Delgado Wise, University of Zacatecas, Mexico, who will speak on “The Political Economy of Mexico-US Migration Under NAFTA”.

Other academic presenters include:

Gina Barclay-McLaughlin, Education, University of Tennessee Bob Barsky, Comparative Literature, Vanderbilt University Stephanie Bohon, Sociology, University of Georgia Dan Cornfield, Sociology, Vanderbilt University Tom Janoski, Sociology, University of Kentucky Sylvia Lazos, Law, University of Nevada Las Vegas Guadalupe Luna, Law, Northern Illinois University DeAnn Pendry, Anthropology, University of Tennessee Barbara Ellen Smith, Women’s Studies, Va Polytechnical Institute Heather Smith, Geography, University of North Carolina at Charlotte Sandy Smith-Nonini, Anthropology, University of North Carolina Steve Striffler, Anthropology, University of Arkansas Jamie Winders, Geography, Syracuse University

A block of continuing education sessions has also been developed for local professionals in law, nursing, and education, as well as sessions devoted to journalists and librarians. The work of these professionals is now significantly affected by recent increases in the number of Latino immigrants in the state, especially the low-wage immigrants who make up the bulk of the new population.
