Congress is preparing to pass immigration legislation that could affect millions of people for a decade to come. Some politicians are proposing legislation to severely punish people without documentation and criminalize compassionate action to assist them, turning some asylum seekers and service providers into criminals. These steps may appease hard line anti-immigrant constituencies, but they will not advance comprehensive immigration reform that respects people’s dignity while improving immigration policy.
