SAALT Letter to DOJ

South Asian American Leaders for Tomorrow (SAALT), a national nonprofit that seeks to ensure full and equal participation of South Asians in U.S. political life, sent a letter on March 28 to the Department of Justice urging a series of reforms for immigration courts and the Board of Immigration Appeals including expanding the Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA); reinstatement of a 3 judge panel for review of each claim appealed to the BIA; better access to translators and counsel; increasing the diversity of immigration judges and discouraging the use of widespread mandatory detention.  For more of SAALT’s recommendations and analysis, you can check out the text of the letter.  it’s oo bad we are not seriously debating many of these recommendations in the ongoing discussions of “immigration reform.”
