S&P Research: Undocumenteds’ Economic Benefit
Investment research company Standard & Poor affirms the longstanding understanding that the cost of providing education, health care and public safety to undocumented immigrants is borne mainly by state and local govoernments in a handful of border states. Although these states get the sales taxes and economic growth that immigrants provide, they miss out on a big benefit that flows to the federal government in the way of payroll taxes. Furthermore, undocumenteds annual contribute billions in taxes into the Social Security trust fund that will never be claimed by the undocumented, creating a windfall for the system.
