Response to Bush Immigration Speech

Before President’s immigration speech today, John Trasviña, MALDEF Interim and General Counsel, released the following statement in response:

“The United States Senate is now considering immigration reform legislation. MALDEF supports comprehensive immigration reform most closely expressed by the bipartisan Kennedy-McCain bill that enforces immigration law and provides for a legal pathway for individuals already in the United States to remain here with legal work authorization and eventual permanent status,” stated Trasviña. In response to reports that the President will deploy over 5,000 National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border, Trasvina commented, “Our National Guard units are exhausted and their families under stress because of their extended service in Iraq. Sending them to patrol the border ill fits their recent combat training and promises to make a difficult situation even worse.” “As the desert heat rises we must do all we can to protect lives along the border. That is why Washington, DC must act now. Comprehensive immigration reform is the real solution to legitimate security and safety concerns,” stated Trasviña.

I must say that this blogger was moderately impressed with the President’s speech.  I am not sure about the National Guard, employment verification, guest workers, etc. but at least the tone was generations and thoughtful and he seemed to be trying to steer a sensible course.

What do you think?  I will post all comments.
