Contrasting Views on Immigrants in Prison

Here are some interesting, and contrasting views, on immigrants in detention.  California Governator Arnold Schwarzenegger, as part of a plan costing at least $3.6 billion to alleviate overcrowding in California prisons, is proposing to free up space by contracting with other states to house 5,000 incarcerated illegal immigrants.   Click here for the story.

In Tennessee, a new contract to house illegal immigrant detainees os projected to boost Corrections Corporation of America’s profits and largely fill the company’s only remaining empty prison, analysts said. The Nashville-based prison operator on Wednesday said it expects inmates to start arriving Oct. 1 at its 1,524-bed Stewart Detention Center in Lumpkin, Ga., under the contract with the U.S. Immigration and Custom Enforcement. CCA said that the agreement is effective through 2011, adding it will update its 2006 earnings guidance when it reports second quarter results.  Click here for more.
