El Paso County Resolution

Today,El Paso County Commissioners passed a resolution detailing its position onimmigration policies.

Theresolution says the following:

§ Stateresources should not be diverted to support policies and initiatives thattolerate or result in racial profiling in our communities.

§ Erectinga wall would be a waste of money. The federal government should instead investin secure, fast, and smart technology to allow fast movement of people andproducts.

§ Federalgovernment should approve additional fund to reimburse states and hospitals forcosts related to emergency health services, prosecution, and the incarcerationof undocumented immigrants.

§ Oppositionto laws that aim to tax immigrants’ remittances.

§ Supportfor a temporary worker program with the possibility for low-skilled immigrantworkers to obtain a permanent residence status.

§ Publiceducation for all children regardless of their immigration status.

§ Supportfair and comprehensive immigration legislation that balances border securityconcerns with recognition of the U.S. demand for workers.

§ Locallaw enforcement should not be given the powers to stop, interrogate, detain orotherwise participate in immigration enforcement activities.

§ Pathto citizenship, to immigrants who have paid taxes, and parented citizenchildren and grandchildren.

§ Largernumber of employment and family-based green cards to promote familyunification, reduce backlogs in application processing, and that demandssensitive quotas.

§ Oppositionto the $100-million expansion of the state immigration program.

§ Obligationto fund and oversee a robust Border Patrol.

§ Lookat technology solutions that offer low-cost alternatives to the interdictionefforts of local law enforcement that lead inevitably to racial profiling.

§ Supportthe implementation of information-sharing, international andfederal-state-local coordination, technology, and anti-smuggling.

§ Supportfor anti-fraud measures and biometric data on all visa and immigrationdocuments.

§ Rejectany action by civilians – individual or groups – who interfere with the dutiesof United States law enforcement officials in securing the border region.

§ Rejectlegislation that criminalizes immigrants, their families, and the organizationsthat provide assistance to them
