Georgia Governor Criticized by Blacks and Latinos
Hispanic and black leaders on Monday called for Georgia Gov. SonnyPerdue to retract statements he made last week about undocumented immigrantsduring the announcement of a statewide crackdown on false documentation.
Gathered underneath the rotunda at the state Capitol, labor advocatesand civil rights leaders said the governor and other lawmakers areunfairly targeting immigrants as a ploy to get re-elected. During a news conference last week, Perdue said, “It is simplyunacceptable for people to sneak into this country illegally onThursday, obtain a government-issued ID on Friday, head for the welfareoffice on Monday and cast a vote on Tuesday,” according to a transcriptprovided by Perdue’s press office.
