Human trafficking: UAE & USA

A few days ago, Al Jazeera reported that the United Arab Emirates has enacted a new domestic anti-trafficking law that widens the definition of the relevant offenses and increases the jail-term to life for organized trafficking and crimes against women, children and the disabled.  The story is here.

The UAE had been the target of criticism in the U.S. State Department’s annual report on trafficking — a report that is mandated by the Trafficking Victim’s Protection Act.  The most recent U.S. State Department report is linked here.

For an interesting critique of the State Department’s methodology in assessing international compliance efforts, see the Government Accountability Office report attached here.
