Federal/State Immigration “Peace” in Arizona
In a departure from past friction, state, local and federal officials said Monday they have what amounts to a new partnership on immigration enforcement in the interior of Arizona. Gov. Janet Napolitano, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio and Alonzo Peña, the new chief of investigations for Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Arizona, met behind closed doors to discuss interior enforcement. Peña said the federal government plans to step up criminal prosecution of people who knowingly hire illegal immigrants as a layered approach to augment border enforcement, while Napolitano and Arpaio said they anticipate greater federal cooperation with state and local law enforcement efforts.
