What “illegal” means
A story in today’s NYTimes highlights the complexities are often involved in efforts to maintain legal status under our immigration laws. The story, by Brenda Goodman, tells of the wife of a state senator in Georgia whose procedural errors could well cost her the right to remain in the U.S. Unless Congress intervenes in her personal case, the law seems to require her to leave. The story, involving missed deadlines and poor representation, is all too typical. The only detail that differs is her connection to a powerful figure who just might ensure that the story of her injustice is actually heard.
