Book Review of White by Law (10th Anniversary Edition)

In 2006, NYU Press released the 10th anniversary edition (revised and updated) of the influential book WHITE BY LAW: THE LEGAL CONSTRUCTION OF RACE, REVISED AND UPDATED by Ian Haney López (UC Berkeley) .  For a review of the book by political scientist Staci L. Beavers, click here.  White by Law studies racial formation in the United States, using as its centerpiece cases, such as Ozawa v. United States, 260 U.S. 178 (1922) and United States v. Thind, 261 U.S. 204 (1923), which addressed the requirement in the U.S. immigration and nationality laws from 1790 to 1952 that an immigrant be “white” to be eligible to naturalize and become a U.S. citizen.
