Sentenced Home

Today at lunch, some of my students held a screening of the documentary film “Sentenced Home,” which follows three young, Cambodian men facing deportation to Cambodia after growing up in the United States as the children of refugees.  The film highlights the harsh consequences of the elimination of 212(c) relief and the absence of relief from removal for noncitizens convicted of an “aggravated felony.” I think it’s a useful teaching tool and a sobering reminder of the harsher aspects of the 1996 immigration laws.  A review of the film can be found here.  Bill Hing has also written beautifully about this very issue in his most recent book, Deporting Our Souls.
