THE FILM
“ This film is important to the entire dance world and to those everywhere who value artists.” Deborah Jowitt, The Village Voice
Narrated by Uta Hagen and Isaiah Sheffer, , the film offers a compelling look at revolutionary modern dancer and choreographer Jose Limón (1908-1972), once described by the New York Times as the “greatest male dancer of his own or any other time.”
The role of Limón’s immigration from Mexico to America is examined centrally and sensitively.
The film has appeared in festivals from India to New York City and won awards for Best Film Made for Television at the Montreal Festival of Films on Art, Best Documentary at Ajijic Festival Internacionale de Cine in Mexico, among others. Screened at Lincoln Center, the Pompidou Center, the Kennedy Center and the National Gallery, Lewis Segal of the Los Angeles Times noted “Roth’s social conscience gives [the film] a strong sense of context and he’s adept at linking Limón’s works to the era of their creation or the man’s own story.”
