Presidential Candidate Guiliani on Immigration

A while back, we blogged on the views on immigration on a number of presidential candidates. Immigration Orange (here) has a story, along with a link to a recent N.Y. Times article, about Rudy Guiliani’s new “get tough on immigrants” stance, which is quite different from the more pro-immigrant views he espoused as Mayor of the Big Apple.

We must recall that the Presidential election season is fast coming upon us.  Indeed, that fact may doom the prospects for immigration reform this Congress.   Anti-immigrant positions often are a quick and dirty way of picking up votes.  Recall that former California Governor Pete Wilson, once an up-and-comer in the national Republican Party, was elected governor on the coattails of Proposition 187 in 1994.  But Wilson deeply alienated many Latino (and other) voters in the process.  He now finds himself in political oblivion and is rarely seen at any public event held by the Republicans.  Food for thought.
