The ongoing saga of Luis Posada Carriles

Kevin Johnson has been posted about the Luis Posada Carriles case.  His post of April 7 — updated on April 12 — is here.

On April 12, the 5th Circuit issued an emergency stay that blocked Posada’s release from prison detention — a release that had been ordered by U.S. District Court Judge Kathleen Cordone on April 6.  The AP now reports that yesterday, lawyers for Luis Posada Carriles filed a motion opposing the 5th Circuit’s emergency stay.  We shall see what happens next…

According to the wire story, the motion alleges that the government’s efforts to keep the aging militant jailed are “frivolous and merely for the purposes of delay.”

Posada is wanted in Venezuela on charges that he was in Caracas when he plotted a 1976 bombing that killed 73 people aboard a Cuban jetliner.  He has been jailed in the United States since May 2005.
