What has Border Enforcement Come To? Death Forecast, Other News at 5?

As mentioned repeatedly on this blog, thusands of deaths along the U.S./Mexico border have resulted due to increased U.S. border enforcement efforts that have re-routed migrants from major border hubs to more isolated and dangerous locations.  For a current death toll from one such operation, see www.stopgatekeeper.org

But the banality of the deaths have reached new heights.  The N.Y. Times (here) reports that an emergency room physician has devised a scientific index to predict the likelihood that illegal immigrants will die while walking through the Arizona desert in extreme heat:  The probability of death reached 50 percent when the temperature climbed to 104 degrees. “It’s like a weather forecast,” said the Rev. Robin Hoover, whose Humane Borders group maintains water stations at desert sites in southern Arizona and northern Mexico.

The deaths of migrants will be on my mind as my family celebrates this Easter Sunday.
