A Documentary on the Brazilian Migrant Experience in the US
Recent years have seen the migration of more Brazilians to the United States. My Grandma Has a Video Camera by Tania Cypriano is a personal documentary of one family’s parallel journey over 13 years, showing their immigrant lives in the U.S. and how they maintain connections with their Brazilian homeland. Grandma Elda uses home movies to register the family members’ lives that reveal complex issues of identity, social dynamics among family vs. community, and transnationality. From enchantment to disillusionment, from idealization to conformity, first-hand images and voices depict how newly arriving immigrants see their new world, and struggle to establish their final home. The finished film is slated for broadcast on KQED’s Truly California series this fall. For more information on My Grandma Has a Video Camera, click here.
