A New Sanctuary Movement?
In recent years, religious leaders, including Archbishop Roger Mahony in Los Angeles, have been at the forefront in fighting for the rights of immigrants. In “Congregations to Give Haven to Immigrants,” James Barrons in the N.Y. Times (here) writes of what perhaps is the emergence of a new pro-immigrant religious movement. Recalling a movement that challenged United States policy in Central America in the 1980s, several religious congregations in New York and other cities will announce a campaign Wednesday to provide sanctuary to illegal immigrants who face deportation.
