The 125th Anniversary of the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882
The Chinese Historical Society of America recently announced a program to mark the 125th anniversary of the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. The purpose of the month-long series of events will be to not only draw attention to the only piece of U.S. immigration legislation which specifically identified a race by name for exclusion, but also to highlight the many contributions Chinese Americans have made to America. Among the events will be hold a panel discussion UC Davis Professor (and immigration blogster) Bill Ong Hing, Donald Ungar, and historian Connie Young Yu, who will explore the historical significance of the Chinese Exclusion Act and its ramifications for today’s immigration and civil liberties debates.
