The Latest from Fortress Europe
Spain, which is at the edge of the European Union, is part of Fortress Europe and has increased its (and thus the EU’s) border enforcement since joining the EU. Indeed, Spain had to pass a comprehensive immigration law to gain membership into the EU, with the fear is that it would become a staging area for entry of migrants from North Africa seeking access to France and Germany. The result of increased border enforcement is similar to that in the United States, with deaths on the border, a growing undocumented population, etc.
Most recently, the BBC (here) reports that the Spanish government has repatriated more than 750 African migrants, including 30 children. The majority were Senegalese and were caught last week trying to enter the Canary Islands, according to Spain’s interior ministry.
