Voters Support Anti-Immigrant Ordinance in Farmer’s Branch
Farmers Branch, a suburb of Dallas, overwhelmingly voted for a local ordinance law barring such things as rental of housing to undocumented immigrants. The law, modelled after the one passed in Hazleton, Pennsylvania that was the subject of a recent trial, was previously passed by the city council and is the subject of litigation. It will be some time before the law, if it ever does, goes into effect.
Look for more anti-illegal-immigrant measures in Farmers Branch with the election Saturday of two new council members who supported the ordinance. According to the Dallas Morning News (here), both said they favor expanding the ban on renting apartments to illegal immigrants to all rental properties in the city and cracking down on businesses that hire illegal immigrants.
The Houston Chronicle (here) reports that MALDEF and other attorneys would soon seek to prevent the ordinance from going into effect.
